Resilient The Story Behind the Comeback
Brooke Wells' story is not simply about returning to competition. It is about what happens when an athlete built around performance suddenly has to rebuild everything from the ground up.
Built to Compete.
Brooke Wells became one of the most recognizable athletes in competitive CrossFit through years of intense training, consistency and an ability to perform under enormous pressure.
Competition became part of her identity. Strength, preparation and performance were not simply things she did — they shaped the way she saw herself.
One Rep. A Different Future.
During the 2021 CrossFit Games, Wells suffered a devastating elbow injury while attempting a heavy snatch.
In seconds, the competition disappeared. The immediate question was no longer how high she could finish on the leaderboard, but whether she could fully recover and compete again.
For an elite athlete, an injury of that magnitude attacks more than the body. It creates uncertainty around identity, confidence and the future.
Sometimes resilience begins when the plan you built your life around suddenly disappears.
Starting Again From Zero.
Recovery forced Wells into a completely different kind of training. Progress could no longer be measured in heavy barbells, event wins or leaderboard positions.
Instead, improvement came through small victories: rehabilitation sessions, restored movement, regained strength and the gradual return of confidence.
The process demanded patience — something competitive athletes are not always accustomed to giving themselves.
Strength Wasn't Enough.
The physical recovery was only one part of the comeback. Wells also had to confront fear, uncertainty and the possibility that she might never return to the athlete she had been before.
Resilient explores that psychological battle: learning to separate self-worth from performance and continuing to move forward when progress feels painfully slow.
Her comeback required a different form of toughness — not the ability to endure another brutal workout, but the discipline to remain patient when the outcome could not be guaranteed.
Resilience is not pretending that setbacks do not hurt. It is continuing to move forward while accepting that recovery may take longer than you want.
Back Under the Lights.
Less than a year after undergoing major elbow reconstruction, Wells returned to the CrossFit Games.
The significance of that moment went far beyond her final position. Simply returning represented months of rehabilitation, uncertainty, discipline and work that most spectators never saw.
The comeback transformed the meaning of competition. Performance still mattered, but the journey required something deeper than physical capacity.
More Than a CrossFit Story.
You do not need to be a competitive CrossFit athlete to understand the central message of Resilient.
The book is about losing control of the path you expected, rebuilding confidence and discovering what remains when performance is temporarily taken away.
For athletes, it offers an unusually personal look at injury and comeback at the highest level of CrossFit. More broadly, it is a story about learning how to move forward when the original plan is no longer available.
The comeback was physical. The transformation was mental.
